Since the Flensburg Brewery was founded in 1888, the pop of stoppers being flipped open has been an ever-present part of the city’s culture. The Flensburg Brewery has always produced premium beer brewed in accordance with the strict German brewing law of 1516. Even when every other brewery was changing to crown caps, Flensburg kept its traditional flip-top bottles. The distinctive “Flensburger plop” sound of a bottle being opened has become a trademark for the brewery and the city in general.
Flensburg beer has a particularly hoppy flavour which gives it its wholesome taste. The excellent quality of the beer is due to the care taken in brewing, by only using the best ingredients, and using state of the art brewing technology. The water used in producing the beer is drawn from underground glacial streams of exceptional purity. Originating in northern Scandinavia, these underground streams run at a depth of 240 metres.
All good things come in (at least) sevens...
The classic Flensburg Pilsener is only one type northern beer dating from the late 19. century when there were around 20 breweries in the city. There are now several types of “Flens”: the tart “Dunkel”, mild “Gold“, malt beer and “Radler” shandy, strong “Winterbock”, and of course non-alcoholic beer. And if you think you can only get good wheat beer in Bavaria, think again – and try the delicious “Flensburger Weizen”.
The “bölkstoff” beer drunk in quantity by famous German comic and movie character “Werner” is actually Flensburger.
Cheers, everyone!
